Jan 29, 2009

Last night I (Fay) spent another hour and a half recording more guitar tracks. Sometimes in the recording process, we have ideas that we start only to realize after you build them out, that they weren’t so good after all. Some times to get a more detailed sound or to accent sounds in rhythm guitar tracks we lay down other guitar tracks.

These other tracks are designed to work with guitar tracks where the guitar is playing chords to bring out certain tones of a chord more or to simply act like a thread. I think of them as threads because you really can’t see treads in clothes from a distance, but if not for them things don’t hold together as well. So like threads in clothes if sewn just right you don’t really hear these tracks unless you listen for them, but with out them the different parts of the song don’t seem to be brought together as well. So after finishing the half track from the lest session I started to build a thread/accent track. I got a little carried away with it and recorded it three times played on different strings each time to get a supper full sound. So after laying down all this work, I tried to listen to it objectively. When I did, I just could not imagine it sounding good at all. There is one part of it I’m going to try and keep in the final mix. Even though I don’t intend to use most of the tracks in the mix, I try not to delete unwanted tracks incase I have a mood swing and decide it is actually good later on. It is always easier to mute and un mute than it is to re-record.

I made another Change last night as well. There is a short little solo section that I decided that would be even better if it were shorter. This is a prime example why keeping good timing and quantizing is important. Because every thing is consistent, I was able to simply delete the extra solo time and slide the tracks to fill in the whole left by the deleted section. It is pretty cool to be able to delete a section out of 12-15 tracks, paste them back together, and not even be able to hear it!

The Drum Roll mentioned before still need work. I think that will be fixed in the next session when I start to tidy up all the guitar tracks. After all that, I think I’ll record a quick single reference vocal  For sherry to start recording her bass part. We’ll keep the updates coming so stay tuned!
